Deciding Yasuni´s future

This is the situation:

Three social groups have made their request to the Constitutional Court to qualify the questions and to call a referendum (the people decide by vote), but they still are not pronounced, two of those resquest are against exploitation and one in favor of President’s decision, apparently the constitutional Court has not given importance to these requests, it is clear that they believe that the decision should be made in the National Assembly because they represent the voice of the people.

Today the National Assembly is debating on the President’s request, the report was approved by the Commission on Biodiversity. In the National Assembly there is no hope to change this decision since most members are from president´s  party.

Every Thursday activists, social groups, young people gather in the streets from Quito to protest, with music, drums, tambourines and songs and today is no exception.

On 5 September, I participated in one of the peaceful marches for THE YASUNI in Quito, I share some of the photos that I caught that day.

I appreciate the attention that many people have given to the above post and some who have mentioned is their blogs, Lynne and Lisa, the fight for Yasuni not only represents the fight for indigenous and uncontacted peoples, represents the fight for Life on Our Planet.

I hope to have good news tomorrow!

I’m praying for a good outcome, Silvana.

  2. Thank you Sylvana for posting this. I know you are following the situation closely. It is close to your heart.

Many, many years ago, I participated in demonstrations against nuclear testing programmes in the Pacific. No one seemed to be listening or to care at the time. Eventually the situation was resolved but it took a long time. I can say the same about pollution; in my teenage years, no one seemed to care. I talked to people about recycling and they looked at me as if I were mad 😀 Sadly, change takes time. I don’t know what one does about the slowness, except to persist and not give up when the cause is right and just.

I won´t give up I know will take time, Yasuni is already a referent for us, new generations are looking a future where We can have better relation with nature. I just hope be alive when this resolved 🙂

    • hi to both of you (and all who replied!) – we sometimes ‘do things’ because our inner voices scream loudly, and we are able to hear and react. there are many who do not understand and think that we’re ‘different.’ there are those who understand but don’t think it’s worth the effort. there are those who hear the same conscience and react. the last group reminds us that we are not alone, and hopefully others will take note in time.

it’s great when someone with previous experience speaks up and shares stories of the past and encourages us to stay true to our calling – even if we are discouraged at times.

i love seeing these images! so every thursday we should all be wearing green.. silvana, has anyone printed flags or bumper stikers or ‘buttons’ to put on clothing that says, ‘don’t touch yasuni’? keep sharing those photos!

i’m in mindo for the afternoon/night so hope to do some internet later tonight.

A lovely and encouraging comment. Is there a logo or something similar that I could put on a Thursday post? Actually, I wrote my latest post, about the conservation of the Wollemi Pine, with Silvana in mind. It is an encouraging story of universal cooperation to rescue one of the oldest trees in the world. One pertinent point, in relation to the Yasuni, is that the original group of Wollemi were discovered in 1994; the location was kept secret and every attempt made to preserve its isolation. However, somehow, people seem to have located it and left a virus behind which has affected the original stand of trees.
